Autumn Talks – Thursday afternoons

Entrance to all talks (except 13th Oct)  is free to members of Friends of Duff House (£10 for the calendar year), and to those with access to Duff House (eg HS members or day visitors).  Others are very welcome to attend on payment of £4.40 at the shop desk on arrival.  The talks are timed so that lunch in the Tea Room can be enjoyed before the talk, or afternoon tea before the Tea Room closes.

Thu 13th Oct 10.15am to 4.45pm in the Grand Salon/Long Gallery
Dolphins, Tulips and Napoleon”. A day of six short illustrated talks by experts but aimed at everyone. Repeated from Wed 12th Oct. Detailed program and tickets (incl House entrance and lunch) obtainable from www.historicenvironment.scot/whats-on.

Thu 20th Oct 2pm for ~1 hour in the Long Gallery
The Development of the Country House Tradition in Banff, Buchan and Formatine” by David Walker. Starting with William Adam and Duff House, via Neoclassicism, Greek Revival and Italianate styles, British and Scottish forms, decline in the 20th century, right up to a rebirth in very recent times.

Thu 27th Oct 2pm for ~1 hour in the Long Gallery
Recording and Interpreting Moray’s Burial Ground Archive” by Keith and Helen Mitchell. The talk will cover the subjects of how to go about finding individual grave sites, making use of local publications and restoration techniques. Duff House interest is included with Duff of Muldavit memorials from Cullen Old Kirk, which for many years were situated in the Duff House mausoleum.

Thu 3rd Nov 2pm for ~1 hour in the Long Gallery
The Great Tapestry of Scotland” by Susie Finlayson, one of the stitchers on this remarkable tapestry, a brainchild of Alexander McCall Smith, aided by historian Alistair McCall and artist Andrew Crummy.

Thu 10th Nov 2pm for ~1 hour in the Long Gallery
Deskford, A Lower Banffshire Parish” given by John Aitken who has done so much research to produce the recent book of this name. The talk will illuminate daily and social life over the centuries, noting the Carnyx, the silver coin hoard, three ruined castles and so much more !

Thu 17th Nov 2pm to ~3.30 in the Long Gallery
A lecture by Graeme Gollan of NGS with a conservation flavour. This talk has been arranged by Grampian Decorative and Fine Arts Society but is open to Friends and others.

Thu 24th Nov 2pm for ~1 hour in the Long Gallery
Creative Banff”. Julian Watson gives us further insights into local history with modern parallels.

Thu 1st Dec 2pm for ~1 hour in the Long Gallery
Rothesay to Raasay”. Gordon Casely delights us again – this time with the photographic outcome and delightful stories of his and Jinty’s cycle ride.
