Friends of Duff House produce two substantive books available for very reasonable costs, and two free information leaflets.  A brief description and availability are given below.  Printed copies can be sent by post – please arrange by emailing friendsofduffhouse@gmail.com – at the cost plus postage and packing, as indicated below.

 

GLEANINGS FROM A DUFF HOUSE GARDENER’S DIARY – BANFF 1873-4   £10220809 revG part 0a cover

This is a local history book of 244 pages, published Aug 2022.  It is based on an apprentice gardener’s diary.  John Donaldson started his career at Duff House, living initially at the Vinery bothy in what is now known as Airlie Gardens, then at The Orchard, the main producing garden for Duff House.  Via various other jobs he culminated his career as President of the New York Flower Exchange!  In his Diary he refers to many local places and happenings, and these have been researched and explained in this book.  There are also chapters on the history of the Duff House gardens, plus Banff and Duff House in 1873-4.  Over 200 illustrations and fully indexed.

OUT OF THE BLUE – The Bombing of Duff House  £5180712 1m file idw Out of the Blue revH 300dpi cover1

On 22nd July 1940 a German Heinkell 111 bombed Duff House – then a Prisoner of War Camp.  6 German sub-mariners and two British guards were killed and many injured.   76 pages explains the background to the sinking of the U-26, gives lists of the crew members and others involved, and what happened afterwards.  The book also outlines the several mysteries that surround PoW camp No 5, such as why there is no War Office file!  50 illustrations.  Published 2018 to coincide with the dedication of the joint German and British War Memorial at Duff House on the 78th anniversary of the bombing.

Provides outline information for a walk from Duff House through the woods, ultimately to the Bridge of Alvah, with outline information about some of the features.
