Fri 28th Nov 2pm ILLUSTRATED TALK – Community Space in Duff House
“Postcard Tales – stories from the front and the back”
There are well over a thousand different postcards of Banff and Macduff since 1902, and this 30 minute audience interactive talk will give a small foretaste of a hoped-for future exhibition in the Long Gallery. The front of the postcards are often the only pictures of views and buildings that are no longer there – and fortunately not just of the main tourist spots – remembering Banff and Macduff used to be major tourist destinations; but quite often the back of the postcards (or in the case of really early postcards – the front, as nothing but the address was allowed on the back) hold quite a lot of interesting background stories – sometimes much much more than just the weather! The Talk and hoped-for Exhibition explore some of those local history and heritage stories. Free entry to the Talk, open to all.
This talk will be followed by a 15 minute AGM for Friends of Duff House which will include an illustrated summary of the last year’s activities, and a look ahead to the next year; non-members are welcome to stay. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served afterwards.
Sat 29th Nov 6pm at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (Sandyhill Road) a special mass remembering the north east Scotland Polish soldiers, in connection with the Eagle and the Unicorn exhibition.
Until Sun 28th Dec: EXHIBITION “The Eagle and The Unicorn”
A much acclaimed exhibition by Macduff Heritage Society supported by FoDH telling the stories of those Polish Soldiers from WW2 and their descendants, who made north east Scotland their home, when returning to Poland was too dangerous, and who are now a vibrant part of our community.
Until 23rd Aug 2026: WORK IN FOCUS “Christ Delivered to the People” by Stanley Spencer
An interesting 1950 painting, oil on canvas, depicting Christ being led away after his condemnation. Pontius Pilate is sitting on the steps washing his hands; and the disciples have turned their backs and are scuttling away. Also interesting is how the personal life of the artist is in the picture too; the cruel faced woman to the bottom right with a grasping hand is thought to be Spencer’s second wife, Patricia Preece, who was at the time involved in divorce proceedings.
