What’s On in May 2019
To Sun 5th May: Exhibition: “Meet your Maker” This is a collaborative partnership between Craft Scotland, HES and Aberdeenshire Council; senior art and design students from Banff Academy have researched, developed and created new pieces of contemporary art, inspired by Duff House and the Early Silver exhibition. Incl in House admission.
Sun 5th May: A Day Out at Duff House A filled Sunday outing:
09.30 Duff House, Exhibitions and Tearoom open.
12.00 Guided tour for an hour around the House.
13.00 Time for a spot of lunch in the Tearoom.
13.30 Guided tour for an hour through the woods incl inside the Mausoleum (weather permitting).
14.30 Piano recital in the Grand Salon.
16.45 Last orders in the Tearoom before the House closes at 17.30.
All except your lunch and tea are included in normal House admission (free entrance if you are an HES member!). Book your place on the tours (max 12) by calling 01261 818181 or take a chance on the day.
To Sun 12th May: L S Lowry “Canal and Factories” The last chance to see famous stick men! But there is much more to this painting; do come and discover. Incl in House admission.
From Sat 18th May: Exhibition: “Romantic Scotland” This brings together treasures from the National Gallery of Scotland and Historic Environment Scotland, to contrast the romantic depictions of Scotland’s changing landscapes created by artists and writers in the 19th century with the reality of ordinary life. Includes works by Sir John Lavery, Patrick Nasmyth, and Sir James Guthrie; dramatic landscapes continue to shape perceptions of Scotland, and stunning early photography and historic objects reframe these works in their historical contexts. Until Sun 29th Sep. Included in House admission.
Sat 25th and Sun 26th May: COASTAL FRINGE FESTIVAL
Duff House: Free entry both days; also “Romantic Scotland Outside Art”
For the Coastal Fringe weekend, for the fourth year running, Friends of Duff House are holding their outside art event 11am to 4pm. Everyone, all ages, are welcome to:
a/ come and paint on large format easels; perhaps taking inspiration from the Romantic Scotland Exhibition, or perhaps something else from your imagination;
b/ especially for this year, come and paint a copy of one of the Exhibition masterpieces – well actually one twentieth of it! We will provide A3 paper and a palette with multiple paint colours as well as brushes, and ask twenty people to paint one section of one of the paintings – from an image of it. We will then laminate all twenty sections and re-assemble the Masterpiece! Please do come and take part in the fun.
Banff Castle: 10am to 4pm. Banff Art Club Exhibition, Deveron Camera Club Exhibition, Mike Samson (Scottish land- and sea-scape painter) Exhibition, Glass Exhibition, Castle Pipe Band, Deveron FM, Banff Academy Art and Design Exhibition, Craft Stalls, Sculpture, various Charity stalls, art and plant sales, Car Boot Sale (Sat 25th only), Family Fun Day (Sun 26th only) by “The Different Not Less Foundation”.

Walking the Marches: 10.30 Sat, meet at Plainstones, Low St Banff.
Duck Race: 3pm, Greenbanks, (Banff side of River Deveron mouth downstream from Banff Bridge).
Farmers Market: 9-12 Sat, Macduff Primary School.
