What’s On in March 2019

Thu 28th Feb   James Byres  FoDH Talk 2pm (see below).  An interesting Scotsman who lived in Rome for many years, acting as an agent for Grand Tourers who wished to acquire paintings and other artefacts.  William Paton PhD student, has been researching this influential Scotsman not often remembered.

to Sun 17th Mar:  “Scotland’s Early Silver” If you haven’t seen this excellent Exhibition yet, how silver helped to shape Scotland, it’s worth trying to get here.  Incl in House admission.

to Sun 17th Mar:  “Above Scotland” Another most worthwhile Exhibition with stories around aerial photos, some local and others around Scotland.  Incl in House admission.

Sun 3rd Mar:  A Day Out at Duff House  Another chance for a filled Sunday outing:

11.00  Duff House and the very special Early Scottish Silver Exhibition opens

12.00  Guided tour for an hour around the House

13.00  Time for a spot of lunch in the Tearoom

13.30  Guided tour for an hour around the “Pleasure Grounds” including inside the Mausoleum

14.30  Piano recital in the Grand Salon

15.15  Time for afternoon tea!

16.00  House closes

All except your lunch and tea is included in the normal entrance fee (free entrance if you are an HES member!).  Book your place on the tours (max 12) by calling 01261 818181 or take a chance on the day.

Thu 7th Mar  “The Lynx”  FoDH Talk 2pm (see below). David Hetherington is an ecologist and author and in 2018, in co-operation with others, presented unbiased factual information about the Lynx and how it interacts with humans and their activities.  What would it mean to live alongside Europe’s largest cat?

Thu 14th Mar  “The Three Harbours of Macduff”  FoDH Talk 2pm (see below).  Macduff Heritage Society in collaboration with others presents a history of the harbour facilities that Macduff has enjoyed from the earliest times, using many maps, drawings, photos and previously unseen video footage.

Thu 21st Mar  “Romantic Scotland” FoDH Talk 2pm (see below).  In May 2019 an exciting new Exhibition is coming to Duff House with this title.  Rebecca Bailey (HES) and Patricia Allerston (NGS) will show us some preview pictures.  The Exhibition explores how a romantic view of Scotland’s past popularised by writers like Sir Walter Scott and painters like Alexander Nasmyth compares with archival evidence, using objects, paintings, photographs and other treasures.

from Fri 29th Mar  “Meet your Maker” This project by Banff Academy students and three craft makers explores and expresses the connections between our heritage and the modern world of technology.  Until Sun 5th May.  Incl in House admission.

Sat 30th & Sun 31st Mar  “Geometric Jewellery Workshop” Work with artist Naomi McIntosh to create a piece of jewellery inspired by the architecture of Duff House using wooden elements.  Incl in House admission, but booking in advance is essential.  Suitable for age 7+ accompanied by an adult.

FoDH 2pm Thurs Talks are held in the Long Gallery; all welcome, no booking needed.  Talks are for an hour or so.  All Talks are **PERFUME FREE ZONES**.  Members of FoDH (£10 for the year) and members of HES gain free entry; otherwise a charge of £4.40 applies.   One further Talk on Thu 25th April (with brief AGM) and resume in October.
